Community-Based Learning
Learning Through Community, Experience & Participation
At Portside ART Institute, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when people have the opportunity to participate in their community.
Community-based learning connects education with real-world experiences. Instead of learning only through a classroom or structured lesson, participants can learn by doing, contributing, collaborating, exploring and connecting with others.
Portside creates opportunities for people to develop skills and confidence through meaningful community experiences.
What Is Community-Based Learning?
Community-based learning brings learning and participation together.
Participants may develop skills through:
- Community projects
- Creative activities
- Events and festivals
- Group programs
- Recreation
- Volunteer experiences
- Collaborative projects
- Community partnerships
- Hands-on activities
- Leadership opportunities
- Peer learning
- Real-world experiences
The emphasis is on participation, experience and connection.
Learning by Being Part of Something
Community-based learning can provide opportunities to practice skills in environments that feel relevant and meaningful.
A participant might:
Create something
→ Share it with others
→ Work as part of a group
→ Develop new skills
→ Reflect on the experience
→ Apply what they learned
The experience itself becomes part of the learning.
Portside Community Learning Opportunities
Depending on the program, community-based learning may include:
Community Projects
Participants work together on creative or practical projects that contribute to the Portside community or surrounding community.
Events & Festivals
Events provide opportunities to participate, perform, volunteer, organize, collaborate and develop practical skills.
The Port Stanley Comedy Festival, for example, creates opportunities for performers, volunteers and community members to participate in a shared creative event.
Creative Community Programs
Creative activities can provide opportunities to build skills while participating with others.
Recreation & Participation
Recreational activities can support social connection, confidence, creativity and meaningful engagement.
Leadership & Facilitation
Participants may have opportunities to take on leadership roles, assist with activities or develop facilitation skills.
Community Partnerships
Portside may work with community organizations, educators, businesses and other partners to create meaningful learning opportunities.
Learning Through Participation
Community-based learning is not necessarily about achieving a traditional academic outcome.
It can also be about developing:
Confidence
Trying something new and discovering what you can do.
Communication
Learning to interact, collaborate and share ideas.
Teamwork
Working with others toward a shared goal.
Creativity
Finding new ways to approach challenges and express ideas.
Responsibility
Taking an active role in a project, activity or community experience.
Leadership
Developing the ability to guide, support and encourage others.
Connection
Building relationships through shared experiences.
A Place to Participate
Portside seeks to create opportunities for people to move from being observers to being participants.
There are many ways to become involved:
- Attend a program
- Join a workshop
- Participate in a community project
- Volunteer at an event
- Perform
- Help organize an activity
- Develop a creative project
- Support another participant
- Explore a leadership opportunity
Participation can look different for everyone.
Community-Based Learning & Inclusion
We recognize that people participate in different ways.
Some people may want to perform in front of a group. Others may prefer helping behind the scenes. Someone else may want to create, organize, observe before participating, or contribute in a quieter way.
Portside aims to create opportunities for people to find their own meaningful way to participate.
Community Learning & Personal Growth
Community-based learning can help people discover strengths that may not always become visible in traditional learning environments.
Through participation, people may discover:
- New interests
- Creative abilities
- Leadership skills
- Social confidence
- Practical skills
- A sense of belonging
- New relationships
- New possibilities
Our goal is to create experiences where learning and community participation can happen together.
Who Can Participate?
Community-based learning opportunities may be available to:
- Children and youth
- Adults
- Families
- Community members
- Emerging facilitators
- Volunteers
- Educators
- Community organizations
- Groups and community partners
Individual programs will identify their specific participation requirements.
Community-Based Learning at Portside
Portside connects learning, creativity and community.
We don’t believe you always need a classroom to learn.
Sometimes you need a project.
Sometimes you need a team.
Sometimes you need a stage.
Sometimes you need a place to try something new.
And sometimes, you simply need a community that gives you a place to participate.
Portside ART Institute
Learn through experience. Create with others. Participate in your community.
