Creative Recreation & Respite

Creating Opportunities to Participate, Connect & Enjoy

At Portside ART Institute, we believe recreation is more than simply filling time.

Creative recreation provides opportunities for people to play, explore, create, participate and connect with others in ways that are meaningful and enjoyable.

Our Creative Recreation & Respite Services bring together creative activities, recreation and community participation to provide welcoming experiences for individuals and families.

What Is Creative Recreation?

Creative recreation combines recreational activities with opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

Programs may include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Games
  • Creative projects
  • Music
  • Storytelling
  • Drama and performance
  • Comedy and improv
  • Outdoor activities
  • Community activities
  • Seasonal programs
  • Special events
  • Group activities
  • Individual creative activities

Activities are adapted to the program and the participants taking part.

The focus is on participation rather than performance.

What Is Respite?

Respite provides families and caregivers with an opportunity to have time for themselves while the person they support participates in a safe, meaningful and engaging activity.

Portside respite may incorporate creative recreation, community activities and individualized interests.

Respite can provide an opportunity for a participant to:

  • Try a new activity
  • Spend time with peers
  • Explore creative interests
  • Participate in recreation
  • Develop independence
  • Build confidence
  • Enjoy community experiences
  • Have fun

At the same time, caregivers may have an opportunity to rest, attend appointments, complete errands, spend time with other family members, or simply take a break.

Our Respite Approach

Portside views respite as more than supervision.

We aim to create experiences that are meaningful, respectful and participant-centred.

Where appropriate, activities are based on the individual’s:

  • Interests
  • Strengths
  • Abilities
  • Preferences
  • Communication style
  • Sensory preferences
  • Goals for participation

The objective is to help each participant experience respite as their time, rather than simply being away from home.

Creative Recreation & Respite Programs

Three Ways to Access Portside Respite

At Portside ART Institute, we believe respite should provide more than supervision. It should create meaningful opportunities for people to participate, connect, create and enjoy their time, while giving families and caregivers an opportunity to take a break.

Portside offers three ways for participants to access creative recreation and respite, depending on their needs, interests and available funding.

1. Portside-Based Respite

Participants can come to Portside for creative recreation, activities and community-based programming.

Portside-based respite may include:

  • Creative activities
  • Arts and crafts
  • Games and recreational activities
  • Group programs
  • Expressive arts
  • Comedy and performance activities
  • Seasonal programs
  • Special events
  • Community participation

This option provides participants with an opportunity to spend time in a welcoming environment while exploring interests, developing skills and connecting with others.

2. Home-Based Respite

Home-based respite provides support within the participant’s home.

This option may be helpful for families who prefer to have respite take place in a familiar environment or when home-based activities are the most appropriate option for the participant.

Home respite may include:

  • Creative activities
  • Games and recreation
  • Individual interests and activities
  • Social interaction
  • Supported participation
  • Age-appropriate activities
  • Community preparation or planning

Home-based respite is provided according to Portside ART Institute’s Home Respite Service Policies and Procedures, including requirements related to safety, boundaries, communication, documentation and emergency procedures.

3. Community-Based Recreation & Respite

Respite can also take place within the community.

Participants may be supported to participate in activities and experiences that match their interests, abilities and goals.

Community-based opportunities may include:

  • Community events
  • Recreation programs
  • Local activities
  • Arts and cultural experiences
  • Festivals
  • Shopping or community outings
  • Parks and outdoor activities
  • Libraries and community spaces
  • Portside programs and events

The goal is to help participants experience their community as a place where they can participate, belong and have fun.

Passport Funding

Using Passport Funding with Portside

For individuals who are eligible for the Passport Program, some Portside services may be eligible for funding through their Passport plan.

Passport funding can support opportunities that promote community participation, independence, recreation, social connection and skill development.

Depending on the participant’s individual plan and funding requirements, Portside services may include eligible opportunities such as:

  • Community participation
  • Creative recreation
  • Recreational activities
  • Skill development
  • Social and community experiences
  • Individualized support
  • Respite-related services where eligible

Because Passport funding is individualized, families should confirm with their Passport funding agency, coordinator or plan administrator that the specific Portside service and expense is eligible under their plan.

Portside does not guarantee that a particular service or expense will be reimbursed through Passport funding.

Day Retreats & Getaways

Time to Step Away. Time to Breathe. Time to Reconnect.

Portside also offers opportunities for individuals, caregivers and families to step away from their usual routines through day retreats and getaway experiences.

These experiences combine creativity, recreation, relaxation and community connection in a setting designed to give people space to pause and recharge.

They may be particularly helpful for people looking for a short break, a creative reset, or an opportunity to spend meaningful time away from their usual environment.

Portside Day Retreats

Our Day Retreats provide a full or partial day of creative and recreational experiences.

A retreat may include:

  • Creative activities
  • Art and making
  • Gentle recreation
  • Laughter and play
  • Relaxation
  • Mindful activities
  • Community connection
  • Time outdoors
  • Shared meals or refreshments
  • Special workshops
  • Seasonal activities

Each retreat will have its own theme, schedule and activities.

Day retreats can be designed for individuals, caregivers, families, groups or specific community populations depending on the program.

A Day to Recharge

Sometimes you don’t need a vacation.

You just need a day where you can step away from the usual routine and do something different.

The Loft

A Place to Get Away

The Loft provides an additional Portside opportunity for short getaways, creative retreats and restorative experiences.

Located in Port Stanley, The Loft can provide a welcoming space for individuals, caregivers, families and groups to step away from everyday responsibilities and enjoy time in a different environment.

Getaway opportunities may include:

  • Creative retreats
  • Personal recharge time
  • Caregiver getaways
  • Family experiences
  • Small group retreats
  • Creative workshops
  • Special Portside programs
  • Community gatherings

The Loft may also be incorporated into selected Portside programs and retreat experiences.

Respite & Getaway Experiences

Day retreats and The Loft are not intended to replace individual respite services.

Instead, they provide additional opportunities for people to step away, recharge and participate in meaningful experiences.

A family might use Portside respite regularly and also choose a day retreat.

A caregiver might attend a retreat for a day.

A group might book a creative getaway.

A participant might take part in a special weekend experience.

There are many ways to create a little more space, creativity and connection in everyday life.

Find Your Way to Recharge

Whether you are looking for:

A few hours of respite
A day of creativity
A community activity
A day retreat
A short getaway

Portside is developing opportunities to help people step away from the ordinary and experience something different.

Portside ART Institute

Create. Rest. Explore. Connect.

Choosing the Right Option

Every participant and family is different.

Some participants may enjoy coming to Portside and participating in a group activity.

Others may be more comfortable receiving respite at home.

Some may want to get out into the community and explore activities that interest them.

We can help families explore which option may be the best fit.

Portside Respite Can Be:

Creative
Explore interests and try something new.

Recreational
Play, participate and have fun.

Community-Based
Get involved in meaningful community experiences.

Individualized
Support can be adapted to the participant’s interests and needs.

Family-Supportive
Provide caregivers with time to rest, attend appointments, complete errands or simply take a break.

Our Goal

We want respite to feel like an opportunity, not an obligation.

For the participant, respite can be a chance to do something enjoyable, develop interests, connect with others and experience greater participation.

For caregivers, respite can provide valuable time to recharge and attend to their own needs.

For families, it can create greater balance and connection.

Portside Creative Recreation & Respite

Create. Participate. Connect. Enjoy.

Portside may offer several forms of creative recreation and respite, including:

Group Recreation

Structured creative and recreational activities in a group setting.

Individual Recreation

One-to-one opportunities based on a participant’s interests and preferences.

Community-Based Recreation

Activities that take place within the community, such as attending events, visiting local spaces, participating in activities or exploring community resources.

Special Events

Seasonal programs, creative events, festivals and community activities that provide additional opportunities for participation.

Home Respite Services

Portside may provide home-based respite services for eligible participants and families.

Home respite is provided according to Portside’s Home Respite Service Policies and Procedures, which establish requirements for:

  • Participant safety
  • Staff safety
  • Boundaries
  • Emergency procedures
  • Communication
  • Documentation
  • Family expectations
  • Service limitations
  • Incident reporting

Home respite services are designed to provide meaningful engagement for the participant while providing caregivers with a period of respite.

Inclusion & Accessibility

We recognize that people participate in different ways.

Some people may enjoy group activities. Others may prefer individual activities or quieter experiences.

Some participants may communicate through speech, while others may use different forms of communication.

Some may want to try everything, while others may need time to observe before joining in.

Portside aims to create opportunities that respect individual differences and encourage participation at a comfortable and appropriate level.

Recreation, Connection & Community

Creative recreation can provide opportunities to build relationships and participate in community life.

A game can become a friendship.

A creative project can become a shared experience.

A community event can become a sense of belonging.

A new activity can become a new interest.

Our goal is to create opportunities for people to participate in life, not simply be cared for.

Who Are Our Services For?

Creative Recreation & Respite Services may be available to:

  • Children and youth
  • Adults
  • Individuals with diverse abilities
  • Families
  • Caregivers
  • Individuals who benefit from additional recreational or community participation opportunities

Specific eligibility, staffing, scheduling and service requirements will vary by program.

What Portside Respite Is — and Is Not

Portside respite is a creative recreation and community participation service.

It is not psychotherapy, counselling, crisis intervention, medical care or a replacement for clinical services.

Where a participant requires clinical or specialized health services, those needs remain outside the scope of Portside’s recreation and respite programming.

This distinction allows Portside staff and facilitators to focus on what they do best:

creating safe, meaningful opportunities to participate, connect and enjoy.

A Different Kind of Respite

We believe respite can be a positive experience for everyone.

For the participant:

Something to look forward to.

For the caregiver:

A chance to breathe.

For the family:

An opportunity for balance.

For the community:

Another opportunity for inclusion and connection.
