Creative Education

Learning Through Creativity, Experience & Participation

At Portside ART Institute, we believe education can happen anywhere — not only in a traditional classroom.

Creative education invites people to learn by doing, exploring, creating, practicing and participating.

Our educational programs combine practical learning with creativity and real-world experience. Whether someone is learning a new creative skill, developing confidence, exploring an area of interest, or preparing to facilitate community programming, Portside creates opportunities to learn in ways that are engaging, accessible and meaningful.

What Is Creative Education?

Creative education uses creativity as a pathway to learning.

Rather than focusing only on lectures and textbooks, participants may learn through:

  • Hands-on activities
  • Creative projects
  • Art and making
  • Storytelling
  • Performance
  • Games and play
  • Group activities
  • Experiential learning
  • Reflection and discussion
  • Community participation
  • Practice and demonstration

The goal is not simply to acquire information. It is to experience learning and develop skills that can be used in real-world settings.

Portside offers educational opportunities for people with different interests, goals and levels of experience.

Our Learning Philosophy

Learn by Doing

We believe practical experience is an important part of meaningful learning.

Participants have opportunities to try skills, practice techniques, participate in activities and apply what they are learning.

Creativity Supports Learning

Creative approaches can make learning more engaging, memorable and personally meaningful.

Everyone Can Learn

People bring different strengths, experiences and learning preferences. We aim to create learning environments that allow participants to engage in different ways.

Learning Is Relational

Learning often happens through interaction with other people. Discussion, collaboration, feedback and shared experiences are important parts of the Portside learning environment.

Learning Continues Beyond the Classroom

We encourage participants to take what they learn into their homes, workplaces, communities and everyday lives.

Experiential Learning

A central part of Portside’s educational approach is experiential learning.

Participants may:

Learn → Explore → Practice → Reflect → Apply

This cycle allows people to move beyond simply understanding an idea and toward actually using their knowledge and skills.

Who Can Participate?

Creative education opportunities may be available for:

  • Children and youth
  • Adults
  • Families
  • Educators
  • Community members
  • Emerging facilitators
  • Community organizations
  • Professionals seeking creative learning opportunities

Each program will identify its intended participants, prerequisites and requirements.

Certificates & Training

Some Portside educational programs may include a certificate of completion, while designated training programs may lead to Portside certification.

Where certification is offered, Portside clearly identifies:

  • Learning requirements
  • Participation requirements
  • Practicum requirements, where applicable
  • Examination requirements
  • Competency requirements
  • Certification requirements

Completion of a Portside educational workshop or course does not automatically constitute professional or clinical certification unless the program specifically states that it leads to a Portside certification.

Creative Education & The Counselling House

Portside’s educational programs are focused on creative education, community-based learning and facilitation.

Clinical psychotherapy education and clinical mental health training are provided through The Counselling House and are separate from Portside’s creative education programs.

This distinction allows Portside to focus on its unique role as a creative education and community learning organization.

Learn Something. Create Something. Try Something New.

You don’t have to consider yourself “creative” to participate in creative education.

You simply need curiosity and a willingness to try.

At Portside, learning can be practical, playful, collaborative and creative.
