At Portside ART Institute, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when people have the opportunity to participate in their community.

Community-based learning connects education with real-world experiences. Instead of learning only through a classroom or structured lesson, participants can learn by doing, contributing, collaborating, exploring and connecting with others.

Portside creates opportunities for people to develop skills and confidence through meaningful community experiences.

A participant might:

Portside Community Learning Opportunities

Depending on the program, community-based learning may include:

Community Projects

Participants work together on creative or practical projects that contribute to the Portside community or surrounding community.

Events & Festivals

Events provide opportunities to participate, perform, volunteer, organize, collaborate and develop practical skills.

The Port Stanley Comedy Festival, for example, creates opportunities for performers, volunteers and community members to participate in a shared creative event.

Creative Community Programs

Creative activities can provide opportunities to build skills while participating with others.

Recreation & Participation

Recreational activities can support social connection, confidence, creativity and meaningful engagement.

Leadership & Facilitation

Participants may have opportunities to take on leadership roles, assist with activities or develop facilitation skills.

Community Partnerships

Portside may work with community organizations, educators, businesses and other partners to create meaningful learning opportunities.

A Place to Participate

Portside seeks to create opportunities for people to move from being observers to being participants.

There are many ways to become involved:
