Expressive Arts
Creativity as a Way to Express, Explore & Connect
At Portside ART Institute, we believe creativity gives people many ways to express ideas, tell stories, explore interests and connect with others.
Expressive arts at Portside bring together creative activities, learning and participation through a variety of forms — from visual art and storytelling to comedy, performance, music and creative play.
You don’t have to be an artist or performer to participate.
Expressive arts are for everyone.
What Are the Expressive Arts?
Expressive arts include many different forms of creative expression.
At Portside, these may include:
- Visual art
- Drawing and painting
- Crafts and making
- Storytelling
- Creative writing
- Comedy
- Improv
- Theatre and performance
- Music
- Movement
- Creative play
- Photography and media
- Collaborative creative projects
Programs may focus on one creative form or combine several.
Why Expressive Arts?
Creative expression can provide opportunities to:
Explore
Try something new and discover interests and abilities.
Create
Turn ideas and imagination into something tangible.
Communicate
Share thoughts, stories, humour and ideas in different ways.
Connect
Create and participate alongside other people.
Build Confidence
Practice skills and discover what you are capable of.
Have Fun
Creativity doesn’t always have to have a serious purpose. Sometimes it is simply fun to make, play, perform and laugh.
The Comedy House
Comedy as an Expressive Art
The Comedy House is an expressive arts initiative of Portside ART Institute.
It was created around the idea that comedy can be both an art form and a way of bringing people together.
The Comedy House provides opportunities to explore:
- Comedy writing
- Storytelling
- Improv
- Performance
- Creative confidence
- Public speaking
- Developing comedic material
- Community performance
The goal is not simply to train professional comedians. It is to create opportunities for people to learn, create, perform, laugh and connect.
The Comedy House also supports community fundraising through comedy events.
Port Stanley Comedy Festival
The Port Stanley Comedy Festival is one of The Comedy House’s community initiatives.
The festival brings performers, audiences, volunteers and community members together to celebrate comedy in Port Stanley.
Festival events may also raise funds to support designated Portside programs and community initiatives.
Come for the comedy. Stay for the community.
Creative Expression for Everyone
You don’t need professional training to participate in expressive arts.
You might:
- Pick up a paintbrush
- Tell a story
- Write a joke
- Try improv
- Step onto a stage
- Make something with your hands
- Join a group
- Help behind the scenes
- Create something with a friend
- Simply come and enjoy the experience
There are many ways to express yourself, and there is no single “right” way to be creative.
Expressive Arts & Community
Expressive arts can also create opportunities for people to participate in their communities.
Through performances, exhibitions, workshops, festivals and collaborative projects, Portside provides opportunities for people to share their creativity with others.
These experiences can help build connections between participants, families, performers, volunteers, organizations and the broader community.
Our Approach
Portside approaches expressive arts as opportunities for creativity, education, participation and community connection.
Our programs are not designed around artistic perfection.
They are about:
Trying.
Creating.
Exploring.
Sharing.
Connecting.
Having fun.
Expressive Arts & The Counselling House
Portside’s expressive arts programs are focused on creative expression, education, recreation and community participation.
They are distinct from clinical art therapy, expressive arts therapy, psychotherapy or other clinical mental health services offered through The Counselling House.
Participation in a Portside expressive arts program does not constitute psychotherapy or art therapy unless a program is specifically identified as a clinical service provided through an appropriately authorized clinical provider.
This distinction allows Portside to celebrate the value of creativity while maintaining a clear separation between creative programming and clinical practice.
