Gaming-Based Recreation and Respite

Connection, creativity, confidence, and fun through gaming

GameSpace is a gaming-based recreation and respite program offered through Portside ART Institute. It provides welcoming opportunities for participants to enjoy gaming, explore technology, build friendships, develop confidence, and spend meaningful time in an environment that respects individual interests and abilities.

Gaming can be much more than entertainment. It can be a way to connect with others, explore creativity, practise problem-solving, experience achievement, share interests, and enjoy time away from everyday responsibilities.

GameSpace is designed to meet participants where they are. Some participants may enjoy competitive games, while others may prefer cooperative play, building, storytelling, exploration, watching gameplay, or quiet individual gaming. There is no single “right” way to participate.

What Is GameSpace?

GameSpace offers supportive gaming experiences for individuals and groups who enjoy gaming or would like to explore it as a recreational activity.

Participants may:

  • Play favourite games.
  • Learn how to use gaming equipment.
  • Explore new games and platforms.
  • Participate in cooperative or multiplayer activities.
  • Enjoy individual gaming time.
  • Watch gameplay.
  • Create characters, worlds, stories, or designs.
  • Take part in gaming-related creative activities.
  • Connect with others who share similar interests.
  • Practise communication and teamwork through play.
  • Enjoy structured or flexible recreation.
  • Take breaks or change activities as needed.

GameSpace is participant-centred. Activities are planned around individual interests, communication preferences, comfort, accessibility, and desired level of participation.

Our Approach

At GameSpace, we believe that recreation should be:

  • Welcoming.
  • Inclusive.
  • Flexible.
  • Respectful.
  • Accessible.
  • Participant-led.
  • Encouraging.
  • Free from unnecessary pressure.

Participants are supported to make choices about what they play, how they participate, whether they want to interact with others, and when they need a break.

Our goal is not to measure participants by gaming skill or performance. Our goal is to create meaningful experiences where participants can enjoy themselves, explore interests, and feel that they belong.

GameSpace follows Portside ART Institute’s broader organizational policies related to safeguarding, privacy, emergency response, incident reporting, complaints, and staff conduct.

Recreation, Not Psychotherapy

GameSpace is a gaming-based recreation and respite program.

It is not a psychotherapy service, clinical treatment program, or diagnostic assessment. Activities are designed to provide enjoyment, recreation, social opportunities, creativity, supported participation, and respite.

Participants are not required to discuss personal concerns or engage in therapeutic activities in order to participate.

Benefits of Gaming-Based Recreation

Depending on the participant and activity, gaming-based recreation may provide opportunities to:
